The chromite occurs in layers a few millimeters to a meter or more in thickness alternating with layers of serpentine derived from olivine. The resemblance to a sedimentary rock suggests that these layered rocks were formed by the settling of alternate showers of chromite and olivine crystals on the floor of a magma chamber.
