Origin of alunite deposits at Pidinga, South Australia

Describes the occurrence of alunitized zones in laterite-capped Tertiary kaolinitic clays derived from weathering of feldspathic Precambrian basement rocks of the Pidinga area, southwest South Australia. Results of petrographic, chemical, x-ray, and microscope analyses of the alunitic clays are summarized, and it is concluded that the alunite was formed by metasomatic alteration of kaolinite during regional laterization processes operative in late Pliocene time.
