Sulfide orebodies at Yauricocha, central Peru; replacements of organic reefs?

Hector J. Ward

The Catas ore body at the Yauricocha mine consists essentially of a core of dense, massive pyrite separated from the Cretaceous limestone host rock by a zone containing fragments of the dense pyrite in a matrix of friable, sandy-textured pyrite. Relic sedimentary structures and textures in the sulfide mass suggest that the ore has replaced the core and surrounding talus of an organic reef complex.
