Structure and stratigraphy of the manganese deposits of Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam districts, India

J. S. R. Krishna Rao

The deposits include bedded oxide ores which are considered primary and syngenetic with the enclosing paragneisses (khondalites), and secondary massive botryoidal ores and irregular replacement bodies generally associated with zones of strong structural disturbance. The manganiferous rocks occupy a definite stratigraphic position in the sequence of aluminous and calcareous sediments from which the khondalite formations of the Eastern Ghats were derived. Kodurites, once interpreted as igneous intrusives with which the manganese ores were considered genetically related, represent hybrid rock types formed as a result of assimilation of manganiferous country rock by granite.
