Comments regarding ore genesis at Silver Reef, Utah

Richard V. Wyman

Discussion of a paper by Paul Dean Proctor ["Geology of the Silver Reef (Harrisburg) Mining District," Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey, Bulletin 44, 1953]. Proctor's list of 11 points favoring a syngenetic origin is reproduced and criticized in detail. An epigenetic origin is favored on the basis that mineralization in the area is structurally controlled and because ore-bearing sandstones are altered to a lighter color than adjacent zones.
