The constitution of davidite

J. D. Hayton

Rather than a heterogeneous mixture of rutile with one or more radioactive constituents, as suggested by A. W. G. Whittle, davidite is considered a homogeneous mineral in which uranium and the lanthanons are isomorphously replaceable, as well as probably Ti, V, Cr, and Al. Numerous analyses of material from South Australia and Mozambique support this conclusion. The composition cannot be determined with certainty since the oxidation state of the iron is not known, but the evidence suggests that davidite may belong to the group of multiple oxides containing arizonite and brannerite.
