The pyrite body and copper orebodies, Cerro de Pasco Mine, central Peru

The large trough-shaped body of pyrite at Cerro de Pasco is a structurally controlled replacement of (mainly) folded Triassic-Jurassic limestones of the Pucara formation along the east and southeast margin of a Tertiary volcanic vent. Copper ore bodies and other sulfide masses are interpreted as having formed later in fracture systems which were developed in areas of relative incompetence, principally in peripheral zones of the pyrite body, during late Tertiary wrench faulting associated with compressional folding in the district.
