Copper, lead and zinc in rivers draining Chilean Andes

Geochemical sampling of sediments and water from streams draining the Andes south of the region in which most of the major base metal mining districts of Chile occur revealed anomalously high metal content in several areas. The higher copper values in the Cachapoal-Teno river area probably reflect a wide dispersion aureole centering on El Teniente mine district, and those of the Osorno region may be due to the presence of extensive Recent basalt flows. Indications of lead in the Osorno region and Chillan area and of lead, zinc, and copper in the Villarica lake area, however, cannot be correlated with any known mineralization.
