Uranium-bearing bodies in the ore deposits of Traversella (Italy)

Uraninite, first detected in mill concentrates of the contact metasomatic ores of the Traversella mine, exploited for their content of magnetite, scheelite, and various sulfides, has been found to occur in rocks of a particular hornfels facies, characterized by ferromagnesian silicates. Where light silicates predominate, as in mineralized garnetites, no radioactivity has been encountered. Formation of the uraninite is considered to have been contemporaneous with the development of the hornfels.
