Most of the hydrothermal copper, gold, silver, and lead-zinc deposits and the contact metasomatic iron ores of Chile are spatially and probably genetically associated with late Cretaceous plutonic rocks of granitic to dioritic composition; they are found in well-defined belts or regions mainly in the northern part of the country. Other types of ores include sedimentary manganese deposits, such as those in lower Cretaceous tuffaceous sandstones in Coquimbo province, Precambrian itabirites, and magmatic iron deposits in late Tertiary or Quaternary tuffs in eastern Antofagasta.
