Brief comments on the art and science of economic geology

It is argued that field geology is a very personal art and skill in which the individual's background of training and experience tend to develop a subjective bias rather than an objective basis for his geologic inferences and interpretations. The use of photogeology, geochemistry and geophysics helps to reduce the personal bias in field work. The quantification of geologic observation is urged to serve as a basis for the application of statistical analysis to the interpretation of the field data. The development of statistical data through the characterization of mineral deposits on punch cards can lead to the use of computer techniques in mineral exploration problems.
