Description and origin of uranium deposits in Shirley Basin, Wyoming

Uranium deposits are envelopes at the interface between tonguelike bodies of altered ground and the enclosing unaltered ground; these tonguelike bodies follow more permeable sandstone beds of the Green River Formation. Major orebodies occur along lateral and terminal margins of the envelopes. In altered ground, mineralizing solution has removed calcite and pyrite, and formed limonite and nontronite. Uranium deposition occurred where weakly acidic uraniferous ground-water solutions were neutralized by normal alkaline ground water.
