Lead-zinc ore deposition in the light of fluid inclusion studies, Providence Mine, Zacatecas, Mexico

F. J. Sawkins

Lead-zinc-silver ores occur in pipes cutting Mesozoic carbonate rocks in the vicinity of a Tertiary granodiorite stock. Potassium-argon dates indicate near-contemporaneity of ore and intrusion. Fluid inclusions suggest temperatures of deposition ranging from 365 degrees C for massive unzoned cores of sphalerite crystals to 205 degrees C for colorless outer rims, with little evidence for lateral or vertical temperature gradients. Salinities range from 5 to 40 percent equivalent weight percent NaCl, with large fluctuations during most of the ore-forming period. Calculations suggest that 200 cubic kilometers of granodiorite would provide an adequate source for the mineralization.
