The search for anomalies requires a departure from standard sampling procedures in that it is important to insure that all unusual areas are sampled. The number of samples that will be considered anomalous, requiring further investigation, can, to some extent, be predetermined by use of simplifying assumptions about the distribution of regional and anomaly values. Critical values can be established that will assist in estimating work required in a survey to insure success at any given probability level.
