Regional geology and major ore deposits of central Peru

Ulrich Petersen

The principal types of ore deposits include disseminated copper-zinc-silver ores in skarn, complex copper-lead-zinc-silver deposits, and simple and complex lead-zinc-silver deposits. Of less importance are quartz-molybdenum veins, red-bed copper deposits, and vanadium deposits. Host rocks are Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks (particularly limestones) and Cenozoic volcanics. Structure, host rocks, and ore controls are diverse, but a close association between ore deposits and igneous activity is evident. Eight deposits discussed in detail (Antamina, Cobriza, Cerro de Pasco, Yauricocha, Morococha, San Cristobal, Casapalca, Visco-Aruri) provide examples of the principal associations.
