Reflectance and anisotropy of a particular rank of coal vary with pressure, time, and temperature of carbonization. Optical properties of artificially and naturally metamorphosed coals of the same rank may differ. Optical properties may have value in quality control for industrial carbonization (e.g. briquetting).
