Structural analysis of ore shoots at Greenside lead mine, Cumberland, England

David Gough

Ore shoots are controlled by openings formed when slip occurred on an irregular fault surface. The degree of opening is related to the apparent dip of the fault measured in profiles parallel to the direction of net slip. The analytical method used here involves measuring these apparent dips, and contouring the values obtained. In the case of the Greenside mine, where slip on a normal fault is nearly downdip, there is good correlation between ore shoots and places where the dip exceeds 70 degrees .
