The lead-zinc ores of the Zeehan mineral field are zoned around the south-east margin of the Heemskirk granite stock. Sulphur isotopic analyses exhibit considerable variation in sulphide minerals in both the granite and the lead-zinc ore. delta S 34 values vary from +15.1 to +2.2 per mil in sulphides from the granite, and from +12.0 to -3.6 per mil in sulphides from the lead-zinc ores. The delta S 34 values of the ores decrease across the mineral field and may be related to increasing distance from the source. Variations in isotopic composition between coexisting sulphides apparently represent a paragenetic effect, with later-formed minerals depleted in S 34 with respect to earlier minerals.
