The purpose of this collection of papers is to address the still controversial question as to the continuity of modern plate tectonic processes back through Earths early geologic history by cataloguing worldwide Precambrian ophiolite sequences. For the economic geologist and explorationist, this volume provides an opportunity to acquaint themselves with geological and geochemical characteristics of Precambrian ophiolite assemblages and of Phanerozoic analogues. This, in turn, will allow them to recognize this distinctive type of sea-floor assemblage in the field and from geochemical study, as well as the implications of its presence within certain Precambrian volcano-sedimentary terranes.
The editors organized the series of 22 papers into four sections: Proterozoic ophiolites and related rocks, Archean ophiolites and related rocks, models for the evolution of oceanic crust with time, and analogies to Precambrian ophiolites. The editors introduction to these sections is somewhat lengthy and repetitious, but, at the same time, it is a good summary of the different ophiolite settings and their characteristics, and also serves as a volume . . .
