The authors of this book are all well represented in the relevant journals, and they have produced a volume that is basically an overview of our current understanding of fine-grained, muddy sediments. Their stated aim is to appeal to a broad audience interested in diverse aspects of fine-grained sediments and sedimentary rocks. They envisage the book being used as the basis for a one-semester course, or as a reference for professionals in the various disciplines that require some knowledge of this subject. They have gone to considerable effort to achieve wide appeal, by avoiding excessive referencing, but providing an auxiliary reference list for each chapter (digging deeper) and minimizing jargon while providing an excellent glossary. The many diagrams and photos are also clear and instructive.

The book comprises nine chapters, seven appendices, and the glossary. The chapters are well structured, and together provide a comprehensive review of the current understanding of most aspects of fine-grained sedimentation.
