When asked to review a book whose subject is not central to your research speciality, but nevertheless of great personal interest, what do you do? Right, try to suggest someone more qualified than you who might do a better job. Trying to do this with Hydrogeology of the Oceanic Lithosphere just led me to discover that all the top people I could think of in the field were excluded by way of being authors of chapters! A more detailed look at the contents convinced me that the book covers such a wide range of relevant subjects that there is no such person as "an expert reviewer" for this book. So here is a look at the book from the point of view of a midocean ridge petrologist, one of the many disciplines for which this book should be of interest.
