This volume of papers from a Geological Association of Canada Short Course, which was held in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 2004, is a valuable resource for petrologists and economic geologists. Most of the volume deals with magmatic processes and mineral deposits that occur in or are related to granites, syenites, pegmatites, and carbonatites. Although the overall emphasis is on mineralogy and geochemistry, many of the papers describe important deposits and related exploration strategies. Coverage is not limited to rare elements (RE) as implied by the title but also includes the rare earth elements (REE) La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu. The other RE discussed fall into three principal groups: Li and Be; large ion lithophile elements (LILE) such as Rb and Cs; and high field strength elements (HFSE) such as P, Y, Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta, Th, and U.
