This book bridges the gap between the economic geology and oceanographic communities. Generally, economic geologists are well versed in the hydrothermal systems that form volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) systems on the sea floor yet are less familiar with processes resulting in deposition and zoning of metalliferous sediments over areas as large as, in the case of the South Pacific, 10 million km2.
The book contains 416 pages, 174 figures, and 38 tables in five chapters, synthesizing a diverse literature. It is rich in data documenting the lithological, mineralogical, and geochemical manifestations of these systems over expansive areas of the ocean bottom and emphasizes Russian data, some published here for the first time, that previously had been somewhat overlooked in Western literature.
The first chapter presents extensive data gathered from the East Pacific Rise, Juan de Fuca Ridge, Indian Ocean, South Pacific, and
