Sir: Bechtel et al. (1999) suggest that the formation of diagenetic illite in the Kupferschiefer of the Polish Zechstein basin was coeval with the mineralizing event. The ages estimated for the diagenetic illites are in the range of 190 to 216 Ma. A Middle to Late Triassic date (240220 Ma) for the high-grade mineralization in the Kupferschiefer was inferred from the remanent magnetization of hematite inside the Rote Fäule zone in southwestern Poland and the polar wander paths of Europe and Russia (Jowett et al., 1987). In "Conclusions" (p. 271), Bechtel et al. (1999) stated "Within limits of error, the ages inferred for the diagenetic illites inside the mining district of the Polish Kupferschiefer (190216 Ma) are in agreement with the date of the Kupferschiefer mineralization proposed by Jowett et al. (1987) from paleomagnetic measurements." Thus, paleomagnetic data were used for verification of indirect age determination of the main mineralizing event. According to Bechtel et al. . . .
