Inside the Subduction Factory is a collection of 12 papers with
implications for the so-called "andesite problem." This problem, as
succinctly spelled out by John Eiler in his historical introduction, arises from
two fundamental observations: (1) that continental crust is, on average, of
andesitic composition and (2) that andesitic rocks are abundant in many magmatic
arcs. The problem, thus, is creating rocks of continental composition from
