Acceptance of the R.A.F. Penrose Gold Medal for 2003

President Large, members, and friends: Thank you for your
kind remarks, Geoff, and thank you, members of the Society
of Economic Geologists.
I feel very humble to be selected to receive the Penrose
Medal. Most of the previous recipients of this award have
been outstanding educators or researchers in the science of
ore deposits. I am a prospector and explorationist whose efforts
have been largely in the area of applied science. Often
my success has resulted from rejecting popular dogma rather
than attempting to apply it, and I am convinced that critical
evaluation of both the field data and the academic theories is
very important to success in the strange field of mineral exploration.
