The photograph of J. D. Irving is from his 1918 memorial. The photographs of the five lead authors have been reproduced from the pages of The Society of Economic Geologists, Inc.75 Years of Progress. That publication chronicles the histories of the Society and the Economic Geology Publishing Company, or PUBCO (Skinner et al., 1997, chapter 2). As discussed in Skinner et al. (1997) and in the lead article in this issue, the journal was first published in October 1905. On the founding of the Society of Economic Geologists in 1920, a cooperative arrangement between PUBCO and SEG made the journal the official bulletin of the Society, and the title, Bulletin of the Society of Economic Geologists, was formally adopted in 1930.
PUBCO and SEG continued to operate as cooperating but separate entities until 2001, when the Board of Directors of PUBCO and the Council of SEG, by unanimous consent, approved a formal agreement of merger. This successful merger is described in an editorial by Skinner in the first issue of volume 97 (2002).
